What's up with all this waiting?

I have been thinking about waiting a lot lately. It seems like my social media feeds are filled with advice on waiting...it seems like a lot of people are in a season of waiting. So, what's up with that?
Then, I realized that all of God's children are always going to be in a season of waiting. I mean, Jesus left this earth with His church in waiting, with a promise that He'll return again someday. I wonder if those who watched Him ascend into heaven thought that His promise would come true during their lifetime. And, here we are, almost two thousand years later, and we're all still waiting.
I find it comforting to know that we're all in this same season, but do you wonder why Jesus left us in a season of waiting?
I believe it's because it's all about the waiting and not about the end result, when it comes to our own personal lives. The waiting brings about our true selves. We can't pretend. Eventually, our true selves are going to come out. As we wait and wait and wait...do we continue to keep our eyes on Him? Or, do we panic and give up on Him?
This idea that we're all expectantly waiting for His return really helped to shift my perspective. This has made me view everything through an eternal lense. When I realized that at any moment I could find myself standing before the throne of God, it made all of my so-called hard times seem so trivial.

My mind should be consumed with eternity, not the things here on earth that I am waiting for.

If you've been following along with my blog, you know my story and how we've been waiting and waiting and waiting...for thirteen years now! Fast forward 40 years from now, when the time God has given me on this earth is nearing its end (Lord willing...we all know that could happen sooner!)will I look back and realize that the enemy used the waiting to consume my brain so that I was useless? Or, will I have no regrets because I spent this time adjusting my lenses back to eternity?

So, if you're like me and in a season of waiting for your husband to have more job stability or for your family to have more financial stability, I hope you've found encouragement in these words.

I grew up so far out in the middle of nowhere, you had to drive several miles up a BLM access road to get home. I learned how to drive because my dad let me drive up. It started with me on his lap then when I got big enough, he moved over and I was all on my own!

I love getting to continue this tradition with my own kids when we're visiting my mom. Melts my mama heart to see the big 'ol smile on my daughter's face.

Are you suffering through a hardship?

I have been going through some pretty traumatic and hard things lately. I have become so engulfed with anxiety. My entire body and mind was consumed with what was troubling me.

Then last night I stumbled across James 5:13 " Are any of you suffering hardships? You should pray. Are any of you happy? You should sing praises".

Well, duh!! You should pray, Melissa! It's so simple and I am such a huge woman of prayer but how easily I forget this.

I feel the most stillness when I am out in nature so I have a few places I go to for intentional solitude. I also have some places way more out in nature that I bookmark on my Google maps when I find them. These places I go to when I am fasting and praying for someone else or for guidance.

Today, I went to one of the parks I like to pray and spend a little time with the Lord in communion (whenever I go to a church with these portable communion elements, I throw a few in my purse).

It's super important as mom's that we are intentional about seeking solitude. Our homes will never be still so we can't just wait around for it to happen.

What are some of your favorite places for solitude?

He calls us by name. There's something so comfort

He calls us by name.

There's something so comforting to me, so intimate, that God whose hand spans the universe calls me by name, calls me His.

I love the verses in John in which Mary doesn't at first recognize the resurrected Jesus. It's only when He calls her by name, "Mary," that she knows Him. I also love in Revelation how it says we're going to get a new name and that only we'll know what it is. What a special moment we'll share with Him!

In September of 2020, I was walking along the beach, praying and praising when all of a sudden I heard, "Melissa". I turned to face the waves, thinking this is it, the Lord is going to reveal something big to me...but, that was it. And, as I drove home from that beach trip, I realized He didn't call me by name to speak some big truth about what I was praying for moments before. He called me by name so that I would turn and face Him, ready to go wherever He leads. And for the last 3 years that's where I have been. Facing Him, ready to do His will, with an open and expectant heart that He will lead me where He wants me.

Have you ever been working hard on something good

Have you ever been working hard on something good that God has called you to do .. something to further His kingdom and then He grinds you to a halt?

It doesn't make sense to you. It's something fulfilling, something you love doing. It's hard to be obedient, isn't it?

That's been my story. I can't believe it's been almost 3 years since I have been on here in this community that I love so much. I love seeing my readers and getting to interact with you.

I am so excited that God has me moving forward again with writing and building this community! Thank you to those who stuck around while I was MIA.

This is me on the final morning of a writer's conf

This is me on the final morning of a writer's conference I attended just a week ago. I would get up way too early to go overwhelm my brain for 12 hours then get back to the hotel only to get a little sleep and do it all over again the next day.

I was so excited my last morning in the hotel to have a nice long quiet time with the Lord and process everything at the conference. Let me also just add that even though I have fantasized about going to a hotel all by myself my entire motherhood (almost 15 years!), this was my first time actually getting to do this. So, you can imagine my excitement and also expectations I had going into this.

Anyway, that last morning all my hopes and dreams were quickly vanquished when I was interrupted by a Cops-episode-worthy domestic dispute in the room across the hall from me.

Through their violent yelling, I still managed to whisper out my frustrations to the Lord. You see, the night before I had driven back to the hotel in tears. I was so overwhelmed and discouraged, I decided maybe it was time to throw in the towel on my writing career.

I prayed for the Lord to give me clarity and direction and to please show me that this was indeed His will for me and not just my own wants.

Then I opened my bible. It opened to where I had placed a pencil because I wanted to remind myself to read Psalm 34 that morning.

But, my eyes quickly landed on a verse I had underlined years before. Psalm 32:8

"I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye"

This is one of those intimate moments with the Lord that He so tenderly spoke to me, it's hard to put it into words. But...

He will guide me with His eye.

Have you ever had someone direct you with just their gaze? You have to keep your eyes set on their eyes. If you look elsewhere, even for just a moment, you will miss something.

I wanted to encourage you today. If you're feeling desperate for some guidance, just know these words from Him here in Psalm 32. Keep your eyes steadfastly on His eyes and then you will know the way in which you should go.

The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. It's the kind of place where you have to remind yourself to breathe because the beauty steals your breath.

We took all 5 of our kids through Yellowstone and while everyone was soaking up God's stunning creation, I was busy trying not to puke with anxiety. I was terrified one of my kids was going to trip and plumet to their brutal death.

This is how the enemy uses fear to steal your joy in motherhood. We can either soak up all the good that God has for us or we can choose to keep our eyes steadfast on all the what if's.

Today, I am going to choose to lavish these moments God has given me on this earth. I will have to make this choice 5,286 times a day because I am prone to worry. Fear is my comfortable place, but it's not a place of beauty. I don't want to be old and think back on my motherhood with regrets that I missed out on everything or that I made my kids miss out because of my own fears.

Don't let your fears rob your children of their joy.
